What was it?
For me it was my grandfather's Lada VAZ 21013 when I was just a kid. He would put me in his lap and let me steer on back country roads.
Was was the first car you ever piloted?

The first car I properly drove (not counting moving them about on the driveway) was one of these on track.

First car on public roads was an old 1996 Buick Park Avenue. I hated that thing. But the first car that I drove was my dad's Audi A4. I ended up learning to drive a manual in that. Secretly, of course, because my dad would never let me touch his baby.

2008 Ford Ranger 2.3 RWD 5MT base.
Photo not of it but otherwise pretty much the same. I stalled out twice just rolling downhill for maybe 130 feet. Photo not of it but otherwise pretty much the same.

Unless you count me sitting on my Great Uncle Jack's lap and helping steer his Sedan de Ville ... this is all correct except the paint color. The pillarless option was called the Sport Sedan. I'd have preferred the pillars ....

2005 Impala w/ the sport appearance package.
Looked exactly like this, just without those headlights and foglights. It was reliable and stupidly efficient, but it was awful in every other way.

My mom's blue 3-door 1986 Honda Civic (similar to this pic). It had the base 1.3 and 4-speed manual. It was fun to drive, though not at first with her and my stepdad hollering at me about how I wasn't doing it right.

In that case, this '69 looks identical (dad's Impala was a '69 as well):

2nd truck from the right......My dad worked for a large tire wholesaler and had a company truck and a company car. (this was the first Chevy C10 they purchased) I remember it had "0" options....6 cylinder and three on the tree. I nearly burnt the clutch out of it learning how to do hill starts.
I took my drivers test in his 72 Gran Torino wagon company car with the 460cu motor......that car was *fun*:-)

I believe I have the honor of my first drive being the largest thing here (whether the Impala or the Sedan de Ville). Imagine an 8-year-old me sitting on a retired champion welterweight's lap and trying to keep that car in a lane on Park Heights Avenue in Baltimore. I can still remember what a yacht it was, and putting it back into drive when Jack decided we might both die. And that Impala? I had to take my drivers test in that fucker.

My parents' 1976 Triumph 2500TC. It had an utterly lovely 2.5 litre inline-six (same as the US models of the TR6 sports car), and a 4+overdrive manual transmission. With thirty years of wear on it, unassisted steering, a slightly touchy transmission, and some interesting handling vices, it wasn't the easiest car to learn to drive in, but at the same time, it taught me a lot about how to drive a car with 'mechanical sympathy' – knowing what's going on behind the scenes, and driving to keep everything in harmony. My folks only sold it earlier this year, and I genuinely miss it.

I learned to drive in one of this! A very small car, but I have yet to find a little car that could fit as much stuff as this could. Manual transmission of course!

The Gran Torino wagon was *soooooo* much fun.
I swear it was like a "police package" equipped car.....it had fat tires and those tiny pie plate hubcaps and no options with the full vinyl green interior.
I would take the aircleaner element out and lid off and it would sound like it was going to suck the hood into the carburetor.
Couldn't get more awesome for a 17 year old in 1976.....the only problem was that it got 7 mpg when I took it cruising. Back in 1976...it would cost me 12 bucks to fill up the gas tank-which was 5 hours of pushing shopping carts at my grocery store job.

1999 BMW 750iL (dead ringer for this one, but w/ 5 spoke wheels). Dad bought it in 1999/2000, gave it to my brother in 2004, then my other brother got it in 2009. I had it for all of three weeks before the transmission crapped out. It was like 80 in BMW years. Stuck with a lifeless blob of a CR-V for the time being :(

3rd gen supra. It was my dads best friend's and since he didn't have a job and traveled a lot, it was stored in our driveway. We started it up and I got to steer it arround the block once a week.

First car I ever drove was a '98 Saturn SL sedan. This was back in 2005, just after I turned 16. It was my dad's car, 5 speed, manual locks, windows, no power steering, completely base car. It was definitely a learning experience.
Looked identical to this one

This was what my father had. My first driving lesson was in one of these with a manual in a blizzard driving between Boulder Colorado and Denver. My father was not a calm person. it was a tense drive.

My Stepdad's 1972 Buick Skylark 350 hardtop coupe. Almost exactly like this, except his didn't have the vinyl roof.
I adored that car. Wish he would have kept it.

My dad's '85 Chevy Van.
For whatever reason he decided he wanted me to try moving it forwards an inch to line up the hitch to our camper trailer. I was thirteen, had never operated a motor vehicle of any kind, and didn't really know what I was doing. I put it in drive and let go of the brake pedal and moved my foot over to the gas. It was already moving from releasing the brake and it lurched forwards unexpectedly so I slammed back onto the brake pedal.
My mother and sister (inside the camper) were not very appreciative. The hitch dropped onto the ball and the trailer was jerked abruptly forwards about three feet and stopped just as suddenly. I literally had pulled the floor out from under their feet. My sister had just stood up and got sat back down again. My mom landed in the sink. It's funny now, but it wasn't when my mom was yelling at my dad. I miraculously remain blameless to this day.

(I stalled it when I stopped though)

E23 733i. The one I drove had a much more terrible paint job - it was a this weird metallic salmon pink (sort of?) that BMW made in the early 80s.
It was the CEO's car at my dad's company. He asked me to move it in the parking lot. I think I was 12.
